British Sizing Demystified: How to Find Your Perfect Fit in UK Luxury Outerwear

You love the coat, then you see the size menu. Suddenly, a straightforward purchase turns into a string of questions: is a UK 12 the same as a US 8, does British tailoring run small, should you size up for knitwear, and what happens if you get it wrong? We understand why that can be enough to make a US shopper abandon the basket altogether, especially when the piece is an investment.

This guide is designed to remove that uncertainty with a clear UK to US women's clothing size conversion, practical outerwear measurements and a genuine tailored jacket fit guide rather than vague advice to “check the chart”. We will also cover layering, garment-specific fit and the questions US customers typically have about delivery and returns.

UK to US Women’s Clothing Size Conversion Chart

As a rough starting point, British women’s clothing sizes tend to be 4 numbers higher than the US, so a UK 12 would be a US 8. For Welligogs outerwear, however, don't stop at the number on the label. Use the conversion to identify your likely UK size, then compare your measurements with the size information supplied for the individual garment

If you normally wear a US 8, the UK to US women's clothing size conversion gives you UK 12 as your starting point. For a tailored coat or jacket, though, your bust, shoulders, waist and preferred amount of layering room matter just as much as that number.

That distinction is particularly important with outerwear. A fitted wool jacket worn over a blouse has a different job than a winter coat you expect to pull over a substantial sweater.

Do British clothing sizes run smaller than US sizes?

Not quite. The first thing to understand is that British and American women's sizing use different numbering systems.

A UK 12 being equivalent to approximately a US 8 doesn't mean the British garment is four sizes larger. It simply means the two countries label comparable sizes differently. Nor is there a universal rule that says all British clothing “runs small”. Fit varies between brands and, importantly, between garments from the same brand. A sharply tailored jacket, relaxed coat and substantial sheepskin jacket are deliberately cut to create different silhouettes.

The most reliable approach is therefore simple: convert your usual US size to find your starting UK size, then use measurements and the individual garment's fit to make the final decision.

How to measure yourself for a British coat or jacket

Use a flexible tape measure, keep it comfortably against your body without pulling it tight, and, ideally, ask somebody to help. You should measure yourself whilst wearing what you intend to wear with the item you’re measuring yourself for.

Measure your bust

Run the tape around the fullest part of your bust, keeping it level across your back. Stand naturally rather than holding your breath or pulling the tape tight. This is one of the most important measurements for a fitted coat or jacket because the front should fasten without pulling, gaping or distorting the lapels.

Measure your waist

Measure around your natural waistline (usually the narrowest part of your torso rather than necessarily where the waistband of your jeans sits). On tailored outerwear, this is particularly useful because the shaping of the garment should work with your natural waist rather than fighting against it.

Measure your hips

Stand with your feet together and measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. This measurement becomes increasingly important with longer coats. A coat can fit beautifully through the bust and waist but still feel restrictive if there isn't sufficient room through the hip.

Think about what you will wear underneath

This is the measurement people often forget. If you're buying a lightweight tailored jacket to wear with a shirt, measuring yourself in a chunky winter sweater can give you too much room. Equally, choosing a winter coat based on measurements taken over a thin T-shirt may leave you wishing for another inch when January arrives.

Buying a winter coat? Take your measurements over a similar-weight sweater or layer to the one you expect to wear most often.

The aim isn't to buy an unnecessarily oversized coat. It's to make sure the garment works for the way you will actually wear it.

British coat sizing guide: how should a luxury coat actually fit?

A good British coat sizing guide needs to tell you more than which number to choose. Once your coat is on, there are several signs that tell you whether you've found the right fit.

Shoulders: On a structured style, the shoulder line should look clean and intentional. It shouldn't visibly pull across your upper back, but nor should the shoulder seam drop dramatically beyond your natural shoulder unless the design is deliberately oversized.

Bust: Fasten the coat fully. You should be able to do so comfortably without buttons straining, fabric pulling horizontally or a zip becoming distorted.

Waist: If the coat has a tailored or adjustable waist, the shaping should correspond naturally with your own waist. Our outerwear is designed around the combination of practicality and femininity rather than treating the two as opposites.

Sleeves: Your sleeves should provide coverage without swallowing your hands. Because sleeve construction varies between designs, use the individual product measurements where available rather than relying on a single “correct” sleeve length for every coat.

Movement: This is the test that matters once you've finished looking in the mirror. Sit down. Reach forward as though holding a steering wheel. Bend your elbows. Cross your arms. A beautifully fitted coat still needs to let you live in it.

Tailored jacket fit guide: what makes a jacket look flattering?

A tailored jacket shouldn't simply be the right circumference. The point of tailoring is to create a deliberate silhouette. Start with the shoulders. They form the framework for everything beneath them, so they should look clean rather than tight or collapsed.

Next, look at the lapels and front of the jacket. The lapels should lie smoothly, with no obvious pulling from the bust when the jacket is fastened. The waist should appear defined in the place the design intended, while the fabric should fall cleanly rather than bunching around the torso.

Then move. A good tailored jacket fit guide should never recommend sacrificing comfort for a smaller number on a label. You should be able to reach forward, sit comfortably and wear the layer the jacket was intended to accommodate.

How Welligogs coats and jackets are designed to fit

Odette Coat

The Odette Waterproof Coat is a tailored waterproof style with an adjustable waist. It has a flattering tailored fit. The adjustable waist is useful because it allows you to choose the size based primarily on comfortable room through the upper body and then refine the silhouette at the waist.

For a US shopper, we'd therefore recommend starting with your converted UK size, checking the product's current fit information and thinking about the layers you'll normally wear due to the cut of the garment, it runs on the smaller size so with a sweater, ladies have gone up a size.

Aviator Jacket

The Aviator Brown Sheepskin Jacket is a very different proposition. It's a heavyweight winter jacket made with a 100% sheepskin inner and leather outer, so it shouldn't be fitted using exactly the same assumptions as a lightweight blazer. The design has a structured but relaxed fit intended to accommodate layering.

Here, think winter use first: you want enough space to move and layer comfortably without losing the shape of the jacket. The thickness of the sheepskin makes this piece run small.

Eleanor Coat

The Eleanor Navy Quilted Waterproof Coat is a long-line waterproof and windproof coat with an adjustable waist and removable hood. Because of its longer silhouette, pay attention not only to your bust and waist but also to comfortable movement through the hips when walking, sitting or getting into a car.

Knightsbridge Jacket

Knightsbridge is where Welligogs' tailoring story really comes into its own. Current versions include cashmere-and-wool and wool styles. With a tailored jacket like Knightsbridge, prioritise a clean shoulder line and smooth fit through the bust. You want the waist definition to look intentional, while retaining enough room for the blouse, shirt or fine knit you expect to wear underneath.

What if you are between two UK sizes?

This is where the garment matters more than a blanket sizing rule. For structured tailoring, prioritise your bust and shoulders. A slightly generous waist can often still produce a flattering silhouette, particularly where there is waist adjustment, whereas shoulders that are too small are much harder to disguise.

For a winter coat, consider your usual layers. If one size fits beautifully over a T-shirt but becomes restrictive over the sweater you'll actually wear from November to February, it isn't really the better-fitting size. For a longer coat, check your hip measurement as well.

Don't size down simply because you prefer seeing a smaller number on the label. The best size is the one in which the garment hangs and moves as its designer intended.

If you're genuinely caught between two sizes, use the measurements given on the individual product page or contact Welligogs before ordering.

Should you size up in a British winter coat?

Not automatically. A well-designed winter coat should already include some ease, and buying a larger size without considering the cut can leave you with excess fabric at the shoulders, waist or sleeves.

Instead, think about your normal winter wardrobe.

  • A light layer, such as a shirt, blouse or fine knit, requires relatively little additional room.

  • A medium layer, such as an everyday wool sweater, needs more ease through the bust, shoulders and arms.

  • A heavy layer, such as a chunky knit or several winter layers, can make the next size the more comfortable choice depending on the coat.

A tailored waterproof coat and a heavyweight sheepskin jacket have different constructions and are designed to be worn differently. Choose for the garment, the measurements and your intended layers, not simply for the number on the label.

Ordering Welligogs from the US: shipping, customs and returns

Getting the sizing right is only half the concern when you're ordering an investment coat from overseas. The other question is what happens between clicking “buy” and opening the parcel.

Fortunately, Welligogs currently ships directly to the USA and Canada using DPD Air. Standard US/Canada delivery is 7–10 working days, with free standard delivery on orders over £400; the usual charge below that threshold is £20. An express option is £35, with an estimated 3–6 working days.

More importantly for an American customer worried about unexpected charges, our orders are sent DDP (Delivered Duties Paid). Where applicable, duties, tariffs and taxes are therefore paid by Welligogs rather than appearing as an unexpected bill when the parcel reaches you.

That means ordering from Britain doesn't have to mean guessing your size and hoping for the best. Start with the UK/US conversion, check the garment's measurements and fit, account for the layers you'll actually wear and ask Welligogs if you're still torn between two sizes.
