LEATHER WATERPROOF BOOTS
These are our 6 tips for maintaining your WG Ranger and Sloane Boots through rain or shine:
- WG Leather Conditioning Cream is your best friend. We recommend that you apply this cream to the foot of the leather, this applies to the Sloane Navy too, this should stop the leather from drying out and remove light scuffing. Use this whenever you notice the leather drying out or after use in wetlands.
- We’ll say it again: cream is your best friend. It creates a thicker coating and penetrates deeper. You should avoid using sprays as they tend to stay on the surface or darken the upper leather unnecessarily. The penetration is also superficial at best.
- Welligogs’ special water-resistant leather and waterproof membrane means that you don’t need to use a waterproofing product on the leather.
- You should avoid using cream on the nubuck matt finish leather (leg part of the boot), as it will darken and lose its matt finish, which is not reversible. You can use the WG Waterproof Spray or just wash off the boots with clean water, and a light scrubbing brush is fine to remove dirt. It's possible to purchase a special nu-buck cleaner, but most wearers don’t tend to bother with this area and allow it to age naturally.
- Do not dry your boots in front of heaters or fires but allow to dry naturally standing upright.
- Using a WG boot tree will prevent the boot from folding or collapsing.
The Sloane Navy Boots should be cared for in exactly the same way as the Mocha boots as they are also leather.
For a full clean and reproofing application, use our Leather Care Kit for leather products and Footwear Kit for suede products.
Caution: WG boots are waterproof and designed for recreational use rather than heavy duty stable work or extreme farm use. Bear this in mind as incorrect usage that leads to damage will not warrant a refund.
There is a warranty on the product for a period of 6 months from the date of purchase. Proof of purchase must be provided and the above conditions must have been followed. The warranty is determined on a reasonable wear & tear basis after inspection by our office. It is required that the purchaser returns the product for inspection. The warranty is for defective materials or manufacturing technique, it is not a wear warranty.
WAXED COTTON COATS
Due to the nature of a waxed cotton textile, it is not possible to clean it in the normal way ie. washing in detergent or dry cleaning.
Please read the following tips to help:
- If soiled sponge down outer fabric with luke warm water – you can use a clean brush lightly on the fabric to remove any dirt.
- Hang coat in a dry , non humid ventilated area and let dry naturally.
- You can purchase WG Wax Spray in a spray can, alternative re-waxing cream is also applicable. Keep in mind if you use the cream it may cause patches unless you do the whole garment, with the spray, you will probably blend it in much easier when only doing sections of the garment.
- NOTE: with all waxed cotton garments, the fabric is waterproof but the stitched seams are not – the stitched seams can allow in water to a degree, depending on strength of the rain shower, as the fabric is pierced during manufacture process – every coat is a little bit different to the last, as each machinist sewing will use different tensions in the way they handle the fabric during construction. The seam areas can be sprayed with wax spray – this will fill up the stitching holes and stop water penetration . We have found this to be very effective in making the coats much more water resistant. If you decide to apply the wax spray, it is best to start drenching the seams but then blend outwards away from the seam to finish with a light coating, this will allow the wax to dry without causing a visible water mark line.
- Re-wax any visible worn areas (sleeve creases) or areas showing signs of drying out and all seam work.
- You can wash the corduroy fabric on the collar and sleeve cuffs with detergent and also a light scrubbing brush, then rinse off with clean water and allow to dry – resist allowing detergent to spread to the waxed fabric
- Only use re-waxing spray on traditional full English wax coats and jackets to improve the effects of ageing of the fabric.
WATERPROOF COTTON COATS
- Our Odette and Eleanor coats with their waterproof membrane can be machine washed. Please put them on a cool cycle with similar colours. If you wash on a high heat, you risk melting the glue that seals the seams.
- Do not tumble dry, instead hang up and let it drip dry. Note the outer fabric of the coat will expel a lot of water so we recommend putting a towel underneath it.
- Each garment has washing instructions, please defer to those.
- Whilst the coat will remain waterproof due to the membrane, it may be worth re-waterproofing the outer fabric for extra protection. This can be achieved with our Waterproof Spray.
