Women’s Wax Jacket Guide 2026: How to Choose & Style

Women’s Wax Jacket Guide 2026: How to Choose & Style

A good wax jacket is the one coat you’ll reach for from the first wet morning in October until the last cold walk in spring. Waxed cotton keeps out wind and rain, softens with every wear, and looks better the more you live in it. It’s also one of the few pieces that works as well at a point-to-point as it does on the school run or a weekend in town.

This guide covers how to choose the right women’s wax jacket for you, how to style it through the seasons, and how to look after it so it lasts for years.

What is a wax jacket?

A wax jacket is made from cotton that has been treated with wax, which makes the fabric water-resistant and windproof while still letting it breathe. It’s the classic British country jacket, first worn by farmers, fishermen and riders, and it’s now a wardrobe staple well beyond the countryside.

Over time, waxed cotton develops creases and a gentle patina that are unique to the wearer. Re-waxing every so often restores its weather protection, which is why a well-cared-for wax jacket can last for decades.

How to choose a women’s wax jacket

Three things matter most: the fit, the length and the details.

Fit: tailored or relaxed? Many wax jackets are cut boxy and straight, designed for men and simply made smaller. Ours are cut for women from the start.

•         Tailored jackets are shaped through the body and nipped at the waist. They’re smarter and more flattering, and work well over a dress or slim knitwear. The Louise Mahogany Poppy Lined Wax Coat has a tailored fit with an adjustable waist.

•         Relaxed jackets give you room to layer a chunky cable-knit jumper or a gilet underneath, which is ideal for long, cold days outdoors. The Cambridge Wax Poppy Lined Jacket and the Bristol Wax Jacket both have a relaxed fit.

Length: jacket or coat? A hip-length jacket is lighter and easier to wear day to day. A longer coat gives more cover in heavy rain and on horseback. If you ride, look for a fishtail or vented back that sits comfortably over the saddle.

Details worth looking for:

•         A hood, detachable or tucked into the collar, for sudden showers

•         A corduroy collar and cuffs, which feel soft against your skin and protect the edges that wear fastest

•         A two-way zip, so you can open the hem when you sit or ride

•         Generous pockets for gloves, dog leads and a phone

•         A lining you’ll love seeing every time you put it on

Sizing tip: if you plan to wear thick knitwear underneath, check the fit guide on each product page. Our models’ heights and sizes are listed there, and every jacket can be returned within 60 days if it isn’t right.

How to style a wax jacket

In the country. Keep it classic: a check shirt, a cable-knit jumper, slim jeans or cords, and tall boots. Add a wool scarf and leather gloves when the wind picks up. Browse our tall boots to finish the look.

In town. A tailored wax jacket looks just as smart over a midi dress or tailored trousers and loafers. Belt it at the waist for shape, and swap muddy boots for polished ankle boots.

At country events. For a point-to-point, a game fair or a day at the races, layer your wax jacket over the Burghley Navy Check Zipped Gilet or a cable-knit cardigan. Finish with a felt hat and a silk scarf. A poppy lining adds a flash of colour when the jacket falls open.

Through the seasons.

•         Autumn and winter: layer a cable-knit jumper or the Chatsworth Wool Gilet underneath, and add a hat and gloves.

•         Spring: wear it open over a shirt dress or a Breton top with white jeans for the in-between weather.

Colour pairings. Racing green and mahogany both suit warm autumn tones: camel, rust, cream and navy. A brown check jacket pairs well with denim and soft pastels.

How to care for your wax jacket

Looked after properly, a wax jacket will last for years. The golden rule is simple: never put it in the washing machine or tumble dryer.

Cleaning

1.        Let mud dry, then brush it off with a soft brush.

2.        Wipe marks with a cloth and cold water. Avoid soap and detergent, which strip the wax.

3.        Hang the jacket to dry naturally, away from radiators and direct heat.

Re-waxing

Re-wax when water stops beading on the surface, usually once a year, before the wet season starts. Pay extra attention to the seams, shoulders, elbows and cuffs, which wear fastest.

1.        Clean the jacket and let it dry completely.

2.        Apply a wax dressing evenly over the jacket, concentrating on the seams and stitching.

3.        Leave it to set overnight in a warm, dry room before wearing.

Storage

Store your jacket clean and dry, on a wide hanger, somewhere cool and airy. Avoid plastic covers, which trap moisture.

Scuffs and marks. Small light marks on waxed cotton can be eased away by warming the area gently, for example with a hairdryer, and rubbing it with a soft cloth to spread the wax.

Frequently asked questions

Are wax jackets waterproof? Waxed cotton is highly water-resistant and windproof, and it keeps you dry in everyday rain. All our wax jackets are water-resistant, not fully waterproof. Re-wax regularly to keep the protection at its best, and for heavy downpours choose one of our waterproof Odette coats.

How often should I re-wax my jacket? Usually once a year, or whenever water stops beading on the surface.

Can I wash a wax jacket? Not in a washing machine. Brush off dried mud and wipe the jacket with cold water instead.

Do wax jackets smell? A new wax jacket has a faint, natural waxy scent that fades with wear. Airing it outside helps.

Should I size up in a wax jacket? Choose your usual size for a tailored fit. If you’ll wear thick layers underneath, a relaxed style in your usual size gives you more room.

What’s the difference between a wax jacket and a waterproof coat? A wax jacket is cotton treated with wax. It’s breathable, softens over time and needs re-waxing. A waterproof coat uses a membrane and sealed seams, and needs no re-waxing.

Where are Welligogs wax jackets made? In England, from premium waxed cotton.
