Beyond the Cotswolds: Six Quintessential British Towns to Discover this Summer

The Cotswolds have long held the crown as one of Britain's most beloved countryside escapes, with its picture-perfect cottages, winding streets and idyllic nature. However, here in the UK, we're lucky enough to have plenty of hidden gems just waiting to be explored that rival the beautiful Cotswolds.

Whether you’re looking for a new holiday destination or somewhere to go for the perfect dog walk, here are six towns and villages that capture the essence of British country life without the Cotswolds crowds.

The North: Bakewell, Derbyshire

Nestled in the heart of the Peak District National Park, the historic town of Bakewell is a classic English market town perfectly framed by rolling hills and endless countryside. A must-visit if you’re looking for a Northern escape, Bakewell is an authentic, untouched rural village famed for the Bakewell Tart - a must-try when visiting!

What to do in Bakewell

Embrace the slower pace and spend the morning browsing the local independent boutiques, followed by a peaceful riverside walk along the crystal clear waters of the River Wye. If you’re looking for a bit of history and culture, be sure to visit Chatsworth House, just a short drive away.

Style Tip: With the unpredictable northern weather to contend with, you need robust yet stylish outerwear for a trip to the Peak District. Pair our signature waterproof leather boots with our wax coat for a simple British style that will take you from a countryside walk to a relaxed pub lunch.

The South: Rye, East Sussex

If you’re looking for a beautiful staycation by the sea, then Rye could be your new favourite spot. Historic charm, a medieval village and right on the sea, this destination ticks a lot of boxes for the perfect quintessential British break. Welligogs Manager Tess Annan is a big fan of Rye, telling us, “It delivers everything people love about a historic English town, but with the added benefit of being close to the coast. It feels familiar, but still special.”

What to do in Rye

Spend hours getting lost down the cobbled lanes lined with timber-framed buildings, browse the local antique shops and head to the beach for some locally caught seafood. Before you head home, be sure to head to the famous Mermaid Street for one of the most traditionally British photo opportunities in the country.

Style Tip: The coastal breeze means you’ll most likely need some layers all year round. Opt for one of our raincoats and layer with accessories, such as a hat or silk scarf, to stay effortlessly chic whatever the weather.

Wales: Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan

Perfectly located in the rolling hills of the Vale of Glamorgan, Cowbridge offers a beautifully relaxed, sophisticated staycation in South Wales. Offering all the elegance and charm of the more famous English tourist hotspots, but with its own Welsh identity.  Cowbridge offers the perfect blend of deep-rooted heritage and modern, luxury living.

What to do in Cowbridge

A village that really does have it all, choose between a coastal walk, a visit to Old Beaupre Castle or the historic Cowbridge Physic Garden. Take in the views and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the natural Welsh countryside.

Style Tip: Add a little wow factor to your outfit with our luxury houndstooth jacket, styled over our signature blouse and finished with the perfect denim to perfectly complement Cowbridge’s blend of tradition and modern elegance.

Scotland: Pitlochry, Perthshire

Framed by the rugged wilderness of the Highlands, Pitlochry is a vibrant resort town that combines the very best of Scottish hospitality with countryside living. Coined as the gateway to the Scottish wilderness, add Pitlochry to your Cotswolds vibes list.

What to do in Pitlochry

All about the views and scenery, take a road trip to the nearby Queen’s View to take in the views of Loch Tummel, or go for a stroll along the River Tummel.

Style Tip: If there was ever a place to embrace some check detailing, it’s the Scottish Highlands. Embrace your surroundings in our check waterproof coat for a subtle nod to the home of tartan.

The East: Walberswick, Suffolk

Tucked away on the Suffolk coast, Walberswick is a truly unspoiled village home to artists, writers and creators. An idyllic low-key alternative to the busy Cotswolds, it offers rolling heathlands, hidden sand dunes and rustic cottages.

What to do in Walberswick

Get involved in a classic British seaside activity - crabbing! Spend the afternoon at the harbour exploring the local nature reserve, English country gardens and some afternoon tea at a boutique eatery.

Style Tip: We recommend a more laid-back look for this corner of the world, so why not try our comfortable yet versatile suede loafers and a lightweight jacket - perfect for walking the Suffolk coastline.

The West: Dunster, Somerset

Situated on the edge of Exmoor National Park, Dunster is one of England’s most spectacular medieval villages. It effortlessly balances the dramatic, wild scenery of the West Country with a peaceful, historic charm. With over 200 listed buildings, the village feels untouched and is perfectly overlooked by the towers of Dunster Castle.

What to do in Dunster

Whether you’re into history or not, exploring the rooms and gardens of Dunster Castle is a must-do when visiting Somerset. Tick the castle off your list, then take a leisurely stroll around the village or head down to Dunster Beach for some fresh sea air.

Style Tip: Dunster has it all, from rugged national parks to medieval castles, so you need a look that is right for both. Step out in our premium tweed jacket for an effortless Cotswolds-esque look.
